Meaningless Precision

Napapailing ako minsan pag nagbabasa ng mga recipe sa cookbook. Recipes will usually ask for about a cup of this, a few teaspoon of that, a pinch or dash of something, five or six slices of something more and a couple drops more of something to taste. No objection on these instructions. Ok na sana kaya lang bigla kong mababasa sa baba ng recipe, 5 servings with 865 calories, 533 milligrams of sodium and 32.6 grams of fat per serving.

So what's wrong with this picture? Well, for one, those numbers are much too precise, given what went into computing them. The 5 in 865 is completely meaningless, and the 6 is also irrelevant. The 8 is the only significant number here.

It would make more sense if you'll say that each serving will have 800 to 900 calories or an estimate of 700 - 900 calories would be even better. An added benefit for having a reasonable range of numbers rather than a figure of meaningless precision is that one is not as tempted to swell the recipe and pretend that one is consuming only 865 calories.
